CONSTANT READER STAFF REVIEW: CLAIRE

The difference between a great book and a truly remarkable one is often subtle, but occasionally stories such as this emerge, in which their brilliance can be glimpsed from the first page. You are pulled along at first by a thrilling plot of mystery and adventure, with just a dash of the supernatural. Beneath the surface though, is a potent and hopeful message about fighting for justice, freedom and peace. Rachel and Robert’s experiences of political oppression seem even more relevant alongside recent global events, showing the potential for stories to imaginatively reflect our own world. This is the kind of book that, were I still a child, would have been consumed by torchlight, hidden beneath blankets in defiance of my bedtime. It is the kind of book that is important, not only for the wisdom and insight it contains, but also for the sheer enjoyment it conjures up by offering such an immersive escape from reality.
